A Time To Pause ~ Supporting Your Skin, Body & Health During Menopause
Contrary to some information circulating about menopause, it doesn't have to be a negative time in a woman's life. In fact, it can be one of the most liberating, productive and exciting times. Our "physical" reproductive years may be coming to a close, however, it can be the beginning of a completely new era of productivity and creation. As one cycle ends, another begins.
As menopause (or perimenopause) begins, women's bodies experience a wide range of physical, mental and emotional changes. One of the most significant and notable physical changes is the transformation of their skin.
During menopause, oestrogen levels drop dramatically. This is one of the major catalysts for body, skin, hair and mood disruptions. Our body is truly a miraculous system, and to counteract the increased temperatures we experience at this time, we often perspire more, which is nature's way of cooling us off. Unfortunately, this increase in perspiration can lead to our skin becoming dehydrated, especially when we now spend much of our lives in air conditioning or heating. Dehydrated skin exaggerates the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and as menopause progresses, the skin often becomes much drier (oil), dehydrated (water), and the thickness and density of the skin layers decrease. This decrease in thickness and density, combined with dryness and dehydration, makes the skin more susceptible to damage, which can increase sensitivity and cause more lines and wrinkles.

That being said, it isn't all doom, gloom and bad news. There is much we can do to support our body in the lead up to, and during menopause. Our body thrives if we supply it with the right nutrients and environment. If you start to support your systems prior to menopause (30 to 40 years old) by nourishing your body with nutrient-rich foods and protecting and supporting your skin with good skin care, we can minimise cellular damage, and support your skin to maintain its radiant and healthy appearance. By starting early you give yourself the best foundation for a smooth transition through menopause.
What can you do to support yourself during the three stages of menopause?
There are many professionals who can support you on your journey through the 3 stages of menopause. Perimenopause, Menopause and Postmenopause.
Each stage has its own unique symptoms and support tools. With all stages of menopause, eating a diet high in good quality (preferably organic) foods, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep/rest, daily sun exposure to first morning light and regular exercise will set you up with a great foundation.
Stage 1 Perimenopause ~ During this transition stage the menstrual cycle can become erratic and symptoms like hot flashes and skin changes may begin. You may need to change up your skin care as the hormonal changes begin to alter your skin's physiology.
Stage 2 Menopause ~ This is when you have not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months and ovulation has stopped. As skin becomes drier at this time it is important to add in more nourishing products and supplements to your skin care routine.
Stage 3 Postmenopause ~ Symptoms decrease, however other health conditions may appear such as risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. Skin is thinner and drier, so add in serums and creams to nourish and support collagen and elastin.
If you have any health concerns or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to consult with a medical practitioner. Your medical history, along with a blood test, can help determine where you are in the menopausal cycle. Since everybody is different, understanding what’s happening in your body is essential.
This knowledge can guide you in finding the best ways to support yourself during this phase.
Some things that can assist you during the menopausal cycle:
Phytoestrogens - include phytoestrogens in your diet, as they mimic the hormone oestrogen and can help to combat some menopausal symptoms. Examples are soybeans, garlic, legumes, nuts, apples, and carrots.

Stay hydrated – water is the ideal way to protect the skin (and all your other body organs) from becoming dehydrated. Drink adequate amounts daily, and adding a pinch of Celtic Sea Salt can help replace electrolytes. If you aren't a fan of plain water, add in fruits like strawberries, cucumber or limes for an extra vitamin and taste hit.
Gentle exercise – as our bone density decreases, stay healthy by choosing a regular exercise that you enjoy, ensuring to stay healthy and strong.
Include supplements – check with your medical practitioner first, as you may be low on iron, calcium, magnesium, phytoestrogens and essential vitamins.

Avoid overheating – as hot flashes often come with menopause, choose natural fibres for clothing, avoid foods and drinks that can overstimulate and don’t eat or drink too much caffeine, alcohol, or spices.
Skincare that contains chemicals, water, fillers, preservatives, colours, fragrances and harsh ingredients can be an extra irritating factor when the skin is going through hormonal changes. Choosing gentle products that are nutrient-rich, natural or organic will assist in comforting and protecting the skin.
