How to find your perfect moisturiser

Moisturisers act as protectors of our largest organ, the skin!

How often have you purchased what you thought was a great moisturiser only to find it doesn't feel right or give your skin what it needs?

Using an incorrect moisturiser that isn't suited to your skin can make your skin condition worse. In this blog, we'll provide you with some information to make better, educated skincare choices, so you can feel confident in making the right decisions for your skin.

Benefits of finding the perfect moisturiser:

  • Maintains moisture levels in the skin
  • Maintains the hydrolipidic film
  • Protects the epidermis
  • Delivers natural active ingredients to improve the skin condition
  • Forms a barrier from elements such as pollution, air conditioning, lights and screens that can damage skin and potentially prematurely age us

Perfect & Imperfect Ingredients

Look out for hydrating ingredients in moisturisers that are as clean and natural as possible. These will penetrate the skin, allowing the skin's biological functions to still perform, e.g., to breathe. Plus, they also form a non-occlusive barrier of protection. ( A non-occlusive barrier doesn't clog the pores. ) To achieve this, at organicspa use natural and Certified Organic plant extracts, oils, waxes and butters such as:

  • Rosehip Oil
  • Vegetable Glycerine
  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Shea Butter

Many chemical-based ingredients can be a potential toxin to the skin, cause skin sensitivity, and form an occlusive film ( pore-clogging ). Avoid these:

  • preservatives
  • petroleum
  • parabens
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
  • artificial fragrances
  • and colours or fillers

Look for pure, Certified Organic ingredients, like plant oils, vitamins and nut butters at the top of the ingredient list on the label of your moisturiser, as this is your indicator of good quality (those ingredients at the top of the list make up the largest percentage of the product). Also, ensure your perfect moisturiser includes a high concentration of natural active ingredients and isn't a watered-down product. These skincare products are more concentrated and will last you longer as you will need to use less. And what's better, they also provide your skin with long term results/benefits.

What does your skin need?

Moisturisers have different textures, components and benefits. They can be water or oil-based, a light lotion or a rich cream and can deliver different results like:

  • calming
  • nourishing
  • balancing
  • repairing
  • anti-ageing.

The easiest way to choose your perfect moisturiser is to work out what your skin needs. For example, suppose your skin is oily. In that case, a light lotion with more water-soluble ingredients is a better option as this will deliver hydration, balance the oil flow and be non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores.

If your skin is dry ( lacking oil/sebum ), a cream or oil-based moisturiser will replenish the skin's lack of sebaceous activity and nourish the skin.

For those of you wanting an intensive moisturiser, perhaps ageing is a concern, look for a more active product that can deliver on antioxidants, peptides, vitamins or plant-based protectors that work on delaying the ageing process.

Dynamic External Factors

There's also many changing internal and external influences that can alter your choice of moisturisers. A change of season, ageing, hormonal imbalances, or your skin simply feeling different can all influence your moisturiser choice.

You may require a more nourishing/soothing cream if you have just broken out in some eczema or a repairing cream if you have acne scarring. Many of you will want a lighter textured moisturiser in the summer and a richer one in winter.

If you are travelling to different climates, you may find your skin needing various textured products. For example, when you're lucky enough to holiday in a humid place, your skin may perspire more and still require hydration, but we may find a rich moisturiser uncomfortable. Hence, a lighter, hydrating option is ideal.

One unique external factor you may also like to consider when making this vital skincare choice is how and where the product is made. Choosing a local Australian product not only supports our economy but helps us reduce our carbon footprint. So tread lightly, tread locally.
