Screentime & Skincare: learn to perfect & protect

While I sit here typing away on my laptop, I think about so many other people worldwide who are also spending most of their days (and nights) working and socially engaging via a screen—all due to this pandemic. Did anyone see this coming?

This increase in screen time has us seeing a number of skin concerns due to the short wavelength of blue light that increases the production of free radicals, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, premature ageing, inflammation, age spots and sagging skin. This is all due to the increased exposure to blue light.

Clearly, we aren’t going to be out of this “new normal” anytime soon, so what can we do to minimise the adverse effects of blue light? The proximity of the devices to our skin plays a major role in the damage caused, so make sure you stay a safe distance from your computer screen. (Did you move your phone away or sit back from your screen? Good.) To cut down on the risk of hyperpigmentation, when you hold your phone, go hands-free. And whenever you can, consider social distancing from your devices - perhaps not 1.5 metres, though.

A Natural Beauty Expert and organicspa stockist, Belinda Hughes, says, “Blue light affects not just our skin but sleep circadian rhythms and eyes. This can lead to poor quality sleep and, combined with blue light coming from our screens, increases free radical damage in the skin. Free radical damage from inflammation looks like dull, sallow skin, pigmentation, and redness. Using skincare high in antioxidants and vitamins like Vitamin C is the best way to combat this skin condition.”

It’s important to instil good skincare practices to avoid premature ageing. For example, use chemical-free products that contain high amounts of antioxidants to reduce oxidative damage and a reflective natural sunscreen or bb creams contain containing Titanium Oxide or Zinc Oxide. We have beauty balm fair and beauty balm medium available online and with your favourite organicspa stockist.

Antioxidants help negate blue light damage, and the most effective are; Moringa Extract, Vitamin C, Seabuckthorn Extract, Cacao Butter Extract, Algae Extracts and Lycopene. organicspa’s bb creams contain Titanium Dioxide as well as Vitamin C and other Antioxidants. This makes them a perfect light make-up for day use when on devices. ALL of our skincare products contain high amounts of antioxidants to combat the effects of blue light in particular. Our pro renewa has Moringa Extract - one of the most effective in negating Blue light damage along with many other extracts like Seabuckthorn and Kakadu Plum Extract.

So, every morning before you pick up that phone or turn on your laptop, make sure you protect your skin with an antioxidant-rich moisturiser. We recommend pro renewal or any of our hydrate products or bb creams for the ultimate skin perfection and protection.
