A sign of the times
Having lived in Australia and worked with skin all my adult life, I have noticed how our skin has responded to environmental changes. And unfortunately, the signs of accelerated skin ageing are more prevalent than ever before. Developments in technology and our exposure to blue light and climate change are just two contributing factors affecting our modern-day skin. Toxicant exposure will only increase from here, and as such, our skin demands a different approach to what we did in days gone by.
Accelerated ageing (ageing before our time) can be visible in a variety of ways. It's seen through; fine lines, deep wrinkles, dullness, pigmentation or uneven skin tone, thickened or leathery skin, dehydration, more sensitised irritated or red patches, or finally, in thin/weakened skin. This almost covers every skin concern a modern adult may have.
Fortunately, as our skin is under greater assault from the environment we live in, our bio-chemists are championing botanical skincare research to combat these very environmental aggressors. At organicspa, we do so naturally, without contributing to our toxic load. We are passionate about developing products that have visible efficacy on the skin, are better for human health, and consider long-term environmental safety.
Along with some product recommendations, I have some lifestyle recommendations to help maintain a healthy complexion, despite the pollutants of our time. So let me help you make a few minor changes to your lifestyle, and I promise you that good skin days will happen more often than not. Here's what you can do:
Limit lifestyle pollutants - where you can
The daily choices we all make affect our largest organ, the skin. We cannot turn back time, so let's consider what we can control.
- Drink plenty of water (minimum two litres, more with physical activity or on hot/humid days)
- Stay protected from UV (and remember UV travels through glass, so not just when you are outside)
- Quit smoking
- Limit your alcohol consumption
- Make healthy food choices - include antioxidant-rich foods and a good balance of fruit/vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and good fats.
- Remember, the skin loves omegas - think fish (especially those cold water, fatty varieties like salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines), seeds and nuts, and plant oils (flaxseed, chia, hemp).
- Reduce your exposure to blue light and air conditioning (walking meetings, anyone?)
- Limit the chemicals in your skincare
Smile and stress a little less
Stress is a part of life. I try not to sweat the small stuff and instead smile (sometimes faking it!), and here is why. Thanks to the release of tiny neuropeptides, smiling can trick your brain into being happy and help reduce stress. It's true; you don't even have to mean it!
We already know that stress releases cortisol. And many of us will be aware that cortisol leads to an overproduction of sebum. But did you know that cortisol can also play a role in breaking down elastin and collagen? Leading to…you guessed it…an increase in the prevalence of wrinkles. Whatsmore, if you are anything like me - stress can often lead to inadequate sleep, poor diet and a lack of exercise - which all contribute negatively to your skin's appearance. So next time you feel the build-up of tension, try to grin and bear it, knowing it will help radiate a healthier and happier you.
Commit to caring for your complexion
Visit a salon/spa/clinic for a specialised facial treatment when you can. A professional treatment offers more than a moment of self-care. A trained beauty therapist will provide you with a tailored skin diagnosis and treatment plan options.
Importantly, remember that your at-home skin routine will account for 70-80% of the results that you will see in your skin. So be committed to your at-home regime, and your complexion will really thank you.
Introduce active brightening serum to your regime
To reduce the impact of those environmental stressors on the daily, consider our latest formulation; organicsceuticals active brightening serum. It's the combination of ingredients that really delivers a punch. Let's take a look at what's inside…
It's what's inside that counts
Tomato Fruit Extract is full of carotenoids that absorb UV. These carotenoids are high in antioxidative properties and are anti-inflammatory.
The Lycopene from tomatoes is high in protective antioxidants, and it induces the body's own protective mechanism against oxidative stress and inflammation. This enhances skin resilience, which means plumper skin, reduced lines and better overall skin health.
Studies show Tomato Fruit Extract can reduce melanin content by up to -22% and a reduction in wrinkle volume of -33%.
Ascorbyl Glycoside (AA2G) is a highly stable form of Vitamin C that suppresses melanin synthesis and helps brighten skin, reduce pigment and stimulate collagen production.
Research shows that Ascorbyl Glucoside also helps protect against UV and alleviates skin damage, even after exposure to the sun. This makes it ideal for morning and evening application.
Fucowhite™ is extracted from brown algae known to regulate its own pigmentation. Formulated to work as a tyrosine inhibitor by reducing melasma, this marine active additionally has antioxidant properties to reduce and protect against free radical damage.
In a controlled study, volunteers saw an 88% improvement in skin clarity, and 63% saw a decrease in skin pigmentation.
Hyaluronic Acid is obtained from fermented corn starch, a natural humectant that draws water into our upper skin layers and maintains skin hydration, resulting in plump, smooth and fresh skin. You may have also heard about Hyaluronic Acid's superpower in supporting our body in creating more collagen, which is critical for skin cells to repair and renew. Without collagen, our anti-ageing efforts are lost.
Kakadu Plum Extract is the world's richest source of Vitamin C (one plum, olive-sized, contains 100 times more Vitamin C than a typical orange). Sometimes known as Gubinge, Billygoat Plum, or Murunga, this small fruit is Native to Australia and harvested by indigenous communities on Country. It is a fantastic way to reduce wrinkles and fine lines while promoting collagen production.
Baobab Seed Oil is from the African tree of the same name and is a gamechanger in preventing transepidermal water loss ( TEWL ). It creates a protective layer on the epidermis, strengthening the skin's lipid barrier. Rich in fatty acids and omegas, it assists in maintaining healthy skin and contains natural Vitamins A, C, D, E and F. Plus, it's also anti-inflammatory and balances the skin's sebaceous activity.
Lysofix™ is based on a phospholipid. Lysofix™ is a natural emulsifier extracted from soybeans. It enhances the bioavailability of the formula's actives by increasing their permeability. Lysofix™, therefore, helps assure maximum efficacy, skin integrity and faster results. All while hydrating, promoting collagen production and offering a silky skin feel.
