Why Pigmentation Becomes More Visible at the End of Winter
You haven't been in the sun. If anything, you've seen less of it this month than at any point all year. And yet the freckling across your cheeks, the faint patches at your temples, the mark left behind by a breakout last summer: it has all come into sharper focus.
This isn't new pigmentation. It's the same pigment against a different background.
Two things move at different speeds
Your skin's overall depth of colour isn't fixed. It climbs through summer as melanin production responds to UV, then settles back over the cooler months as that response quietens and the epidermis renews itself. Across a full year, pigment levels peak at the end of summer and bottom out around now.
Discrete marks don't follow that pattern. Freckles fade considerably over winter. Sun spots, the flatter and more defined marks that build up over years of exposure, stay roughly where they are.
So the background lightens while the marks stay put, and the gap between them widens. A wider gap is easier to see.

The second thing winter does
The other change is textural. Cool air, indoor heating and low humidity all push up the rate at which skin loses water through the epidermis, and the surface layer hits its lowest hydration of the year around August.
That matters for tone more than you'd expect. A dry, uneven surface scatters light instead of reflecting it cleanly, so the complexion reads flatter overall. Tone that would look settled on smooth skin looks patchy on rough skin. (If dehydration is the larger part of your picture, our guide to deep hydration goes further into it than this article will.)

Which is why a considered exfoliation step does more for you in August than it does in February. Why late winter is the moment to begin
Timing is where this usually goes wrong.
Actives that work on tone don't correct anything the way a moisturiser immediately hydrates. Melanin gets built through a chain of reactions, and the enzyme tyrosinase acts as the gatekeeper on that chain. Slow tyrosinase and you slow everything downstream of it. But that happens upstream, and it compounds over weeks.
So the moment to begin is before UV climbs again. Starting now gives an active two or three months of quiet work before the light changes. Starting in November asks it to begin from nothing, at the point when conditions are least forgiving.

A note on the sun itself
Late winter is the one point in the Australian year when the two halves of sun advice agree with each other. Across the southern states the UV Index regularly drops below 3 through these months, and when it does, Cancer Council recommends spending time outdoors in the middle of the day with some skin uncovered. Vitamin D depends on that exposure. So does the daylight signal that sets your body clock and, downstream of it, your sleep.
The qualifier is regional. UV levels run higher in northern Australia than in the south, and in some parts of the country the Index sits at 3 or above all year. Worth checking before you decide: the Bureau of Meteorology publishes it daily, and Cancer Council's SunSmart app will tell you what today looks like where you are. At 3 or above, cover up.
How much time you need varies a great deal by where you live, the season and your skin type, and for some people it isn't advisable at all. Your GP is the person to ask about your own vitamin D, and can test for it if there's reason to.

What sits inside Active Brightening Serum

Ascorbyl Glucoside (AA2G), at 2%. Vitamin C's long-standing problem is instability. Pure Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, and in that form it oxidises on contact with air and light, which is why a lot of Vitamin C serums are past their best before you've finished the bottle. AA2G solves this structurally, bonding a glucose molecule to the vulnerable site on the ascorbic acid ring. It stays stable on the shelf. Research on Ascorbyl Glucoside indicates it supports the skin's protection against this delayed damage, which is part of why this serum is used at night as well as in the morning.
Fucowhite (Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract). A brown algae from the northern Atlantic intertidal zone, exposed and submerged twice a day and sitting under sustained UV in between. It has developed its own system for regulating pigmentation: a complex of fucoidans bound to phloroglucinols, the two compounds linked together rather than mixed. On skin, that same complex acts as a tyrosine inhibitor, with antioxidant activity alongside it.

Behind them, Tomato Fruit Extract contributes carotenoids including lycopene, which absorbs UV and inhibit melanin synthesis. Kakadu Plum brings one of the richest natural concentrations of Vitamin C available. Hyaluronic Acid and Baobab Seed Oil handle the hydration side of the picture which is the textural half of the problem this article opened with.
