Winter Protection with Vitamin C

Winter can be harsh on our skin. Whether you experience winter's brutal chill or evade it with air conditioning to heat, we experience less moisture in the air and can even expose the skin to extreme contrasts; toasty warm inside and stepping out into the blistering cold. Depending on where you are, environmental factors will inevitably impact the skin. These factors decrease moisture levels and weaken our skin. As a result, the complexion can become more sensitive, develop telangiectasia (dilated blood vessels), and start to age prematurely.

Vitamin C has long been one of the most powerful brightening, anti-ageing and antioxidant ingredients used in effective skincare. The skin will benefit from quality Vitamin C skincare daily, which is universally beneficial for a variety of different skin types and conditions. With daily use, we notice an improvement in the skin's appearance, texture and resilience to the environment.

Nevertheless, some Vitamin C preparations can irritate sensitive skin and have adverse side effects. In turn, and ironically, it can stress an already compromised skin.

Here at organicspa, we primarily choose Kakadu Plum and Ascorbyl Glucoside, which are botanical sources of Vitamin C. These ingredients are selected for their safety and efficacy on the skin. They are gentle enough to be used on the most sensitive of complexions, and are not at risk of photosensitising (like retinol, for example, which can make the skin vulnerable to light exposure).

Let’s explore these natural alternatives a little more.

Kakadu Plum – is, in fact, the world’s richest source of Vitamin C. Found on Country, naturally grown and harvested by indigenous communities, this small olive-sized Australian native is sometimes known as Gubinge, Billygoat Plum or Murunga. Despite its petiteness, a single plum contains 100 times the amount of Vitamin C of an orange. Our biochemists formulate only the most potent and Certified Organic forms of Kakadu Plum.

Ascorbyl Glucoside (AA2G) – sourced from potato and corn starch, this stabilised water-soluble Vitamin C prevents skin pigmentation. It does this by suppressing melanin synthesis in melanocytes. It also has the ability to reduce the amount of pre-existing melanin, resulting in a lighter pigmentation of the skin. Research shows that Ascorbyl Glucoside also helps protect against UV and alleviates exposure to the sun, making it ideal for morning and evening application.

How Does Vitamin C Revive and Illuminate the Skin?

  • A melanin synthesis inhibitor
Meaning Vitamin C will work to reduce the amount of pigment in the skin to promote a more even skin tone, brighten and reveal a more luminous complexion.
  • Improve Collagen Production
It assists in preventing collagen deterioration and, therefore, will maintain a firmer and stronger skin.
  • Protect the Skin Against Environmental Damage
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Antioxidants act as free radical scavengers as they protect our skin cells from daily aggressors of environmental damage, which cause premature skin ageing. These are caused by blue light, pollution, air conditioning, smoking, alcohol, toxic dietary choices, some medications and stress.
